What mcpbus is, how you may use it and who is responsible for what.

Agreement

These terms apply when you install or use mcpbus. By using mcpbus you accept them. mcpbus is made by Offe Consulting AB (559476-2774), Linköping, Sweden. Questions: hello [at] mcpbus [dot] sh.

What mcpbus is

mcpbus is a local MCP server that connects AI assistants to SQL Server and PostgreSQL. Each connection gives its databases a level — schema (the default), read or readwrite — and mcpbus runs the assistant's SQL as a database user with that level's rights. Exceptions adjust access per server, database and time window. By default, writes wait for your approval, and mcpbus hashes string and binary values in results.

mcpbus is a safety layer that reduces risk. It is not a guarantee.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Your data and backups. mcpbus doesn't back up or restore data — keep backups of anything the assistant can change.
  • The access you set up. The login you give mcpbus sets the outer limit. Preparing a database creates the three mcpbus users in it, with their grants and denies, and lets your login impersonate them; they remain until a DBA removes them. Two server switches, off by default, widen access: executeAsLogin lets the assistant run SQL with all your login's rights, and agentRead lets it read every SQL Agent job your login can read, including step text that may hold credentials.
  • What you approve. AI assistants can make unexpected requests. Approval in the chat (prompt) is a check, not a barrier: the assistant can bypass it, and you can turn it off. strict asks your client directly, so the assistant can't answer it. Give each database the lowest level your work needs, and review what you approve.
  • Where results go. The assistant and its provider handle the results it sees, under their own terms. See Privacy.
  • Compliance. Using mcpbus in line with your organisation's policies and the law.

Free use

mcpbus is free to use, with no account or licence key. Terms for larger organisations may later require registration or a licence. We announce any such change in advance, and it applies only from then on.

mcpbus is distributed through GitHub. You may install and distribute mcpbus within your organisation. You may not sell or redistribute mcpbus without our permission, or use it to break the law. Bundled third-party components keep their own licences.

No warranty

mcpbus is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the guardrails work in every situation, that the software is error-free, or that it prevents any particular action by an assistant or a user.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, Offe Consulting AB is not liable for data loss, data corruption, unauthorised access, downtime, lost profits, or any indirect or consequential damage arising from the use of mcpbus or the inability to use it. This does not limit liability that cannot be limited under mandatory Swedish law.

Changes

mcpbus is in active development, and its features may change. We may update these terms; the date at the top shows when they last changed. Using mcpbus after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

Swedish law applies, and disputes are settled by Swedish courts.
